PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Road Closure in Easton-in-Gordano  The Clerk spent many hours trying to establish what was happening to the buses while part of Priory Road and Debecca’s Lane were closed. The timetable for a shuttle bus was eventually sorted out just before the closure, thanks to the co-operation of St Katherine’s School. Considerable disruption has been caused by the road closures. Obviously the sewage work was necessary, but it is hoped not too much inconvenience has been caused to long-suffering bus passengers!

Passenger Rail Service between Portishead and Bristol  The Council has been kept informed of developments and possible time scales. However, we were astounded to hear at a recent meeting that there might not be a reopened station in Pill, with the service running directly to Bristol! We have expressed our very strong objections to this, and said that our support for the reopening of the passenger rail service would depend on Pill Station being part of the plan.

Longshore  Two Councillors joined local residents in a clear up of the field at the junction of Marine Parade/Avon Road, prior to the fence being repaired and the provision of a new gate. As stated in the last Pill Paper the intention is also to stop this field being used by wheeled (including motorised) vehicles. Unfortunately more rubbish has been dumped there since the clear up by one or more thoughtless residents. It is hoped this will stop in the future. Green waste in particular can be placed out for collection, while large items can be taken to the North Somerset Civic Amenity site at North Weston.

A reminder  …….. that the Parish Council office at the Resource Centre is open Monday to Thursday 9.30 – 12.30 and 1.30 – 3.30 (3.30 – 5.30 on Thursday) and on Saturday from 10.00 – 12.00. As well as the Clerk being available, various documents can be obtained there, including an information booklet about the Council’s work and organisation. In next month’s Pill Paper a list of all full Council and committee dates for 2009/10 will be provided. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 11th when the Chair, Vice-Chair and committees for the next year will be elected. There will be no meeting on the fourth Monday which is a Bank Holiday.

THE NEW LOOK RESOURCE CENTRE

  • We now have a brand new and much more advanced photocopier, and hope to upgrade computer equipment soon.
  • From this month we shall have a second hand book shelf, with the profits being shared with CHEER. Contributions of books (in good condition please) will be most welcome).
  • We also intend to act from this month as a collection point for used printer cartridges and batteries (not rechargeable or car batteries).
  • As well as the continuing weekly visits from Liberata, C.A.B., Wards Solicitors, the Weston Credit Union and Councillor Nan Kirsen, the Police are in weekly attendance on Thursdays  between 4 and 5 p.m.
  • See details below of what we hope will be a very useful course being run in May.

As you all know, the Resource Centre is now working in liaison with the Parish Council, and is being largely funded by the Council. However, the Centre still relies on additional funding. The Community Foundation, who run the Centre, are very grateful for recent contributions from the collection at Frank Huff’s funeral, and grateful to his family for arranging this. Other recent donations have been received from NISA and Waitrose. This will enable, among other improvements, for upgraded computer equipment. We still need to raise more funds, particularly to enable courses to be run and youth activities to continue, and would be grateful to hear from anyone who might be prepared to spare a little time to research and follow up possible sources of grants.
